Opera Hong Kong to Showcase New Arrangement of Bizet’ ‘Le Docteur Mirace’ This May

By David Salazar

Opera Hong Kong is set to present a new arrangement of Bizet’s “Le Docteur Miracle” on May 15, 2023 as part of the 2023 French May Arts Festival.

This new arrangement by Marco Iannelli is scored for piano, strings, flute, bassoon, and horn, and is more of “a re-orchestration of the original score. Reducing the number of musicians allowed me to isolate themes and melodies, and emphasize the internal movement of Bizet’s original harmonies. Instruments become part of the show, characters without words dialoguing with the singers.”

Peter Gordon directs a cast starring Etta Fung, Ashley Chui, Chen Yong, and Isaac Droscha.

The production is being co-presented by Opera Hong Kong and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.

“Le Docteur Miracle” will appear in a double bill alongside a new production of Donizetti’s “Rita,” which was also arranged for a chamber ensemble by Iannelli.
