Oper Köln Unveils 2023-24 Season

First up is “Marla, Die Maifliege” by Brigitta Gillessen and Ralf Gscheidle. The opera stars Tina Drole, Ruth Hade, Alina Koenig, and Maike Raschke.
Performance Dates: August 27 – Sept. 21, 2023
Next up is “Die Frau ohne Schatten.” Maria Albrecht conducts a cast starring AJ Glueckhert, Daniela Köhler, Irmgard Vilsmaier, Jordan Shanahan, and Lise Lindstrom, among others. Katharina Thoma directs.
Performance Dates: Sept. 17 – Oct. 11, 2023
“Così fan tutte” will star Tamara Banjesevi, Bettina Ranch, Wolfgang Stefan Schwaiger, Dmitry Ivanchey, Claudia Rohrbach, and Lucas Singer. Gábor Káli conducts and Tatjana Gürbaca directs.

Emily Hindrichs, John Heuzenroeder, Martin Koch, Miljenko Turk, and David Howes star in “The Strangers.” Harry Oggs conducts and Maria Lamont directs.

“Peter Grimes” will star Brendan Gunnell, Ivana Rusko, and Robert Bork. Duncan War conducts a production directed by Frederic Wake-Walker.

Matteo Beltrami and Arne Willimiczik lead “L’Elisir d’Amore” in a production by Damiano Michieletto. The opera stars Catherine Zukowskki, Grosseda Kamani, Dmitry Ivanchey, Insik Choi, Omar Montanari, Pablo Ruiz, Maya Gour, Regina Richter, and Matteo Roma.

Rainer Muehlbach conducts “The Bremen Town Musicians.” Theresa Von Halle directs a cast starring Alina Koenig Rannenberg, Maria Koroleva, Ruth Hade, Elena Plaza Cebrian, Armando Elizondo, and Emanuel Tomjenovic, among others.
Performance Dates: Nov. 18, 2023 – Jan. 7, 2024
Conductors Andrea Sanguineti and Arne Willimczik lead “The Merry Widow” in a production by Bernd Mottl. The opera stars Giulia Montanari, Claudia Rohrbach, Adrian Erod, MIljenko Turk, and Elissa Huber, among others.

Francois Xavier Roth, Harry Ogg, and Arne Willimczik conduct “Hansel und Gretel.” The opera stars Maya Gour, Maria Koroleva, Catherine Zukowski, Dalia Schaechter, Insik Choi, Miljenko Turk, and Adriana Bastidas Gamboa.
Performance Dates: Dec. 17, 2023 – Jan. 7, 2024
Zimmerman’s “Die Soldaten” will be directed by Calixto Bieito and conducted by Francois Xavier Roth. The cast stars Tomas Tomasson, Emily Hindrichs, Judith Thielsen, Kismara Pezzati, and Nikolay Borchev.

Sebastian Kohlhepp, Dmitry Ivanchey, Anna Lucia Richter, Ana Maria Labin, Emily Hindrichs, and Kathryn Zukowski star in “Idomeneo.” Rubén Dubrovsky conducts a production by Floris Visser.

Boris Blacher’s chamber opera “Romeo und Julia” will be conducted by Luca Marcosi and stars Maria Koroleva, Tinka Pypker, and Emanuel Tomljenovic. Brigitta Gillessen directs.

Gounod’s “Faust” stars Young Woo Kim, Emily Hindrichs, Anne Catherine Gillet, and Karl Heinz Lehner. Francois Xavier Roth conducts a production directed by Johannes Erath.

Aurelia Florian, Cristiana Oliveira, Aldo di Toro, Young Woo Kim, and Jordan Shanahan headline “Tosca.” Giuseppe Finzi conducts and Thilo Reinhardt directs.

“Un Ballo in Maschera” will star Gaston Rivera, Simone Del Savio, Astrik Khanamiryan, and Agostina Smimmero. Giuliano Carella conducts and Jan Philipp Gloger directs.

Next up is Ivan Erod and Thomas Höft’s “Pünktchen und Anton.” The children’s opera stars Tinka Pypker, Ruth Hade, William Socolof, and Claudia Rohrbach, among others. Brigitta Gillessen directs and Rainer Muehlbach conducts.

“L’Incoronazione di Poppea” stars Elsa Benoit, Jake Arditti, Adriana Bastida-Gamboa, Maya Gour, and Paul-Antoine Bénos-Djian, among others. George Petrou conducts. Ted Huffman directs.
Performance Dates: May 5 – June 2, 2024
Sara Blanch, Anthony Leon, and Insik Choi star in “Les Pêcheurs de Perles.” Nicholas Carter conducts.

Closing out the season is Ondrej Adamek and Katarina Schmitt’s “INES,” a modern reworking of the Orpheus myth in the context of nuclear catastrophe. Francois Xavier Roth conducts a production by Katharina Schmitt starring Hagen Matzeit, Catherine Zukowski, Emily Hindrichs, Tara Khozein, Olga Siemienczuk, and Dalia Schaechter.
