Oper Frankfurt has announced that it will extend its closure until at least Jan. 31, 2021.

The opera house has also announced changes to its repertoire, canceling the revivals of Bizet’s “Carmen” and Janáček’s “From the House of the Dead.” Instead, Oper Frankfurt plans to showcase more performances of Puccini’s “Manon Lescaut” and Mozart’s “Don Giovanni.” Additionally, Verdi’s “Aida” will be replaced by the new production of “Luisa Miller” in February 2021.

The German government has decided to extend the lockdown until January 10, but many theaters in Germany have already extended closures until February or March 2021. German Chancellor Angela Merkel and the Prime Ministers of federal states will meet again to decide about new measures, adding more uncertainty to opera houses’ plans. Per sources of German newspaper Der Spiegel, the government and state authorities are admitting the failure of the light lockdown and are willing to impose a much harder lockdown to avoid further spread.

Germany is undergoing a severe COVID-19 second wave, with over 27,000 new daily cases recorded on Dec. 11.
