Olga Kulchynska & Björn Bürger Lead Dutch National Opera’s ‘Le Nozze di Figaro’
By Francisco SalazarThe Dutch National Opera is set to present Mozart’s “Le Nozze di Figaro.”
The production will be directed by Kirill Serebrennikov who will reimagine the opera to the present day, using a set design that sharply exposes the societal divide between rich and poor.
The stage will be split horizontally: above, an elegant, minimalist home for the elite, filled with contemporary art; below, a cramped, cluttered space where the cast changes from everyday clothes into slick servants’ uniforms. This division reflects not only social inequality but also the complexities of identity and gender roles. The director recodes the opera by weaving in modern elements and characters. The character of Cherubino undergoes a radical transformation, with the role split between an actor playing Cherubino and a singer, Cherubina, who interprets his actions. This duality adds an extra layer of ambiguity, underscoring the chaos and eroticism at the heart of the opera’s story.
Conductor Francesco Corti will make his debut leading a cast that includes Olga Kulchynska, Björn Bürger, Emily Pogorelc, Michael Nagl, Véronique Gens, and Cecilia Molinari.
“Le Nozze di Figaro” will open on May 8 and will run through May 28, 2026.
