The Dutch National Opera is set to revive a production of Wagner’s “Tristan und Isolde.”
The production by Pierre Audi will be conducted by Tarmo Peltokoski, who leads his first complete run of Wagner’s revolutionary work.
The cast will include soprano Malin Byström, who makes her role debut as Isolde and Michael Weinius as Tristan. They will be joined by Liang Li as King Mark, Jordan Shanahanas Kurwenal, Leon Kosavic as Melot, and Irene Roberts as Brangäne.
When Audi directed the production of “Tristan und Isolde,” he said, “In a panic even, especially about the finale. I thought: how do I resolve that difficult scene? You need to set up your Wagner production based on the trickiest moments; that’s a lesson I have learned. And the ‘Liebestod’ is the hardest of all those moments. How do you stage Isolde dying an ecstatic death?”
“Tristan und Isolde” will open on Feb. 8 and run through Feb. 23, 2026.
