Obituary: Soprano Monique Borelli Dead at 59 After Incident with Son

Soprano Monique Borelli died in a Marseille hospital, aged 59 on July 23, 2020.

The soprano was stabbed by her 18-year old son following a family dispute in Châteauneuf-le-Rouge, near Aix-en-Provence.

According to France Musique, the incident occurred after Borelli and her husband accused their son of stealing money from them. A judicial process has been opened after the incident.

Originally from the city of Hyères, in the Var, Borelli studied and graduated from the Marseille Conservatory. She was one of the finalists in the Marmande competition in 1998 and 1999 and won first prize at the first Forum Lyrique Arlésien two years later. She went on to perform in such operas as  Humperdinck’s “Hansel and Gretel,” Offenbach’s “Les Contes de Hoffman,” Mozart’s “Die Zauberflote,” and Pergolesi’s “La Serva Padrona.”
