Obituary: Italian Baritone Alberto Mastromarino Dies

On May 4, 2025, Alberto Mastromarino died following a long illness.

Born in Castelnuovo della Misericordia, Italy, Mastromarino studied under Paolo Silveri. He went on to make his debut in 1987 in the role of Amonasro in “Aida” at the Teatro Eliseo di Roma.

Mastromarino would perform over 50 roles in his repertoire all around the world. Among his most notable roles including Scarpia in “Tosca,” Alfio in “Cavalleria rusticana,” Tonio in “Pagliacci,” and Amonasro in “Aida.” He also performed a number of lesser-known Verismo works, including “Sly,” “Francesca da Rimini,” “Le nozze istriane,” “Adriana Lecouvreur,” and “L’amico Fritz.”

He was also known for his Verdi interpretations in such operas as “Macbeth,” “Masnadieri,” “Otello,” and “Falstaff.”

He performed at such theaters as the Teatro Filarmonico di Verona, Metropolitan, Wiener Staatsoper, Teatro Colón de Buenos Aires, Gran Teatre del Liceu, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Teatro alla Scala, Teatro San Carlo, Arena di Verona, Teatro Regio di Torino, and Maggio Musicale Fiorentino.
