
Obituary: Giles Havergal CBE Passes Away at 87

Giles Havergal CBE, the former Artistic director of the Glasgow Citizens Theatre, passed away on Aug. 23, at the age of 87.
Havergal was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, on June 9, 1938. Throughout his career, Havergal was a successful theatre director and actor, opera stage director, teacher, and adaptor. He severed at Glasgow’s Citizens Theatre from 1969 until stepping down in 2003.
Havergal was a guest director for companies including the Scottish Opera, Welsh National Opera, Opera North, Wexford Festival Opera, Buxton Festival, Vancouver Opera, Minnesota Opera, Gelsenkirchen Opera, and the National Theatre Mannheim. He taught at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, RADA, the National Opera Studio, and at the American Conservatory Theater, San Francisco.
In 2002, Havergal was awarded a CBE for services to theatre at the New Year Honors.
