
Obituary: Famed Production Designer Gianni Quaranta Dies at 82

Born in Milan on August 30, 1943, Quaranta was best known for his work in “A Room with a View,” for which he won the Oscar in 1986. He also received Oscar nominations for his work on Verdi’s “La Traviata,” directed by Franco Zeffirelli, and “Brother Sun, Sister Moon.” He won the BAFTA award and the French Cesar awards.
Quaranta was known as a director, production designer, set designer, costume designer, and creative designer in cinema and theater. In theater, he worked with such directors as Götz Friedrich, Jean Mercuri, Jacques Karpo, Andrea Serban, Georges Lavaudant, Luca Ronconi, Giancarlo Menotti, and Franco Zeffirelli.
He went on to set design for such operas as “La Traviata,” “Tosca,” “Rigoletto,” “Falstaff,” “Aida,” “Moise et Pharaon,” “Guglielmo Tell,” “Don Carlos,” “Carmen,” and “Adriana Lecouvreur.” His sets were seen at the Teatro alla Scala, Teatro La Fenice, Teatro dell’Opera in Rome, Teatro Regio di Torino, Teatro San Carlo, Wiener Staatsoper, the Lyric Opera of Chicago, and the Metropolitan Opera.
In film, he worked with Zeffirelli on “Jesus of Nazareth,” “La Traviata,” and “Brother Sun, Sister Moon.” He also designed “Farinelli” for Gerard Corbiau and worked with such directors as Lina Wertmüller, Jean-Pierre Ponnelle, Paul Mazursky, Ermanno Olmi, Paul Schrader, and Salvatore Samperi.
