Obituary: Conductor Herman Engels Dies

Belgium conductor Herman Engels has died.

Engels studied at the Lemmens Institute (Leuven) and the Antwerp and Brussels Music Conservatories. He studied conducting for choirs under Hans Grischkat and Wilhelm Ehmann and for orchestras under Otmar Suitner (Mozarteum Salzburg) and Pierre Dervaux (Paris).

He went on to become the second director and assistant of Vic Nees at the BRTN radio choir in Brussels and went on to conduct choral music at the Music Conservatory of Utrecht and orchestra conducting at the Royal Conservatory of Den Haag.

Engels also conducted at the University of the Philippines, the Universidad Nacional de Costa Rica, the National Mikolajus Ciurlionis School of Arts Vilnius, and the Ivan Franko University Drohobych.

He became known in Belgium for working with numerous orchestras and recorded numerous recordings. He was also a guest conductor with the Belgian Radio and Television, Westdeutscher Rundfunkchor Köln, State Opera Orchestra Budapest, Slovak Sinfonietta, Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra, Tallinn Philharmonic Orchestra, and Krakow Philharmonic Orchestra.
