Obituary: Bass-baritone Alfred Kuhn Dies at 86

On August 2, 2024, Bass-baritone Alfred Kuhn died at 86.

Born in Ober-Roden/Hesse, Kuhn studied singing at the Frankfurt am Main University of Music.

In 1963, he sang his first engagement in Darmstadt and remained a member of the ensemble for 15 years.

In 1978, he became a member of the Deutsche Oper am Rhein for five years.  Then from 1983 to 2012, he was a member of the ensemble of the Bayerische Staatsoper. With the company, he performed Frank in “Die Fledermaus,” Graf Waldner, a retired captain in “Arabella,” and Antonio in “Le nozze di Figaro.” In 1991, he was appointed Bavarian Kammersänger. Roles at the Bavarian State Opera in 2012-13 included BenoÎt  in “La bohème” and Frank in “Die Fledermaus.”

Regarding his death, the Bayerische Staatsoper said, “We mourn the death of Kammersänger Alfred Kuhn, who died at the age of 86 in the early morning of August 2, 2024. We gratefully remember his many acclaimed performances on the stage of the National Theater, for example as Frank in ‘Die Fledermaus’ or Antonio in ‘Le nozze di Figaro.’ With Alfred Kuhn, the Bavarian State Opera has lost a much-esteemed artist and colleague.”
