New York Choral Society to Release ‘Four Madrigals’
By Francisco SalazarThe New York Choral Society has announced that its latest digital collaborative project, “Four Madrigals.”
The project is the latest in the company’s ongoing short film series, “Our Voices.”
“Four Madrigals” is the tenth installment in the series which was launched during the COVID-19 pandemic. Premiering on April 8, this collaboration between NYCHORAL, acclaimed image maker and storyteller Kia LaBieja, and composer Ned Rorem explores the timeless poetry of Archaic Greek poet Sappho in a 4-part visual journey through the depths of human emotion.
In a statement, LaBieja said, “I was inspired aesthetically by renaissance paintings and wet plate photography from the late 19th century/early 20th century. Both art forms are unique in the way that the medium captures a feeling and a moment in their respective time periods. The renaissance engages with the softness and grace of the female form and early wet plate photography are some of the oldest images of our indigenous ancestors. I think both visuals resonate within the film.”
“Four Madrigals” is a testament to the power of artistic collaboration, weaving together music, poetry, and visual storytelling to create a multi-sensory experience.
