The Metropolitan Opera has announced a cast change for the March 22 of “Moby Dick.”
The company said that Peter Mattei has withdrawn from the performance and in his stead, the role of Starbuck will be sung by Thomas Glass, who previously won the Grand Finals of the National Council Auditions in 2019, singing Starbuck’s aria “Captain Ahab? I must speak with you.”
Glass already sang the opening night performance of “Moby Dick” on March 3. His Met Opera debut came in 2022 in “Madama Butterfly” and most recently, he appeared in the 2023 Summer Recital Series.
In addition to his Met performances, Glass has appeared with the Atlanta Opera, Opera Theatre of Saint Louis, Arizona Opera, Wolf Trap Opera, and Houston Grand Opera.
Glass is set to join a cast that includes Brandon Jovanovich, Janai Brugger, Stephen Costello, William Burden, Malcolm MacKenzie, and Ryan Speedo Green. Karen Kamensek conducts the production by Leonard Foglia.
Mattei is expected to return for the March 25 performance of “Moby Dick.”
