Myung-Whun Chung Named New Music Director of Teatro alla Scala

The Teatro alla Scala has announced that Myung-Whun Chung will be the company’s next Music Director.

Chung will take over the role in 2027 with an initial contract of three years. He will succeed Riccardo Chailly.

The decision was made during a board meeting, during which the company’s General Director, Fortunato Ortombina, proposed Chung as the new Music Director.

Throughout the years, Chung has conducted at the Teatro alla Scala on numerous occasions including productions  “Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk” in 1992, “Salome” in 1995, “Madama Butterfly” in 2007, “Idomeneo” in 2009, “Simon Boccanegra” in 2016 and 2018, “Don Carlo” in 2017, “La traviata” in 2019, “Der Freischütz” in 2017, and “Fidelio” in 2018.

He has also conducted major organizations such as the Metropolitan Opera, the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma, Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, Teatro La Fenice, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the Vienna Philharmonic, among others.
