Michael Mayes, Catherine Cook, Laura Strickling Headline ‘The Parting’ Premiere At Music of Remembrance

By David Salazar

Music of Remembrance is set to showcase composer Tom Cipullo and librettist David Mason’s new chamber opera “The Parting” on May 19, 2019 at the Illsley Ball Nordstrom Recital Hall in Seattle.

The performance, which will kick off at 7:30 p.m. local time, will feature baritone Michael Mayes alongside mezzo-soprano Catherine Cook and soprano Laura Strickling. Erich Parce will direct and the program will also feature music by Lazlo Weinder, Sandor Vandor, and Sandor Kuti, all composers who died at the hands of Nazis during World War II.

Music of Remembrance’s instrumental ensemble features musicians from the Seattle Symphony.

The opera is set on May 19, 1944, the final evening at home for Hungarian poet Miklós Radnóti and his wife Fanni. Understanding that they are likely headed to a labor camp, Radnóti contemplates the meaning of life.
