Metropolitan Opera’s ‘Don Carlos’ Heads to HD Around the World

By David Salazar

The Metropolitan Opera’s new production of “Don Carlos” is headed to cinemas on March 26, 2022.

The broadcast, which kicks off at 11:55 a.m. Eastern time, will star Matthew Polenzani in the title role with Sonya Yoncheva as Élisabeth, Eric Owens as Philippe II, Jamie Barton as Eboli, and Étienne Dupuis as Rodrigue. Yannick Nézet-Séguin conducts the performance.

Of the new production, OperaWire’s review noted that the vocal performances were of the highest quality. Of Polenzani and Yoncheva, Francisco Salazar of OperaWire wrote, “the final duet in Act five was sung with resignation as the two used their floating mezza voce sounds to sing the parting legato phrases. The voices blended beautifully as they both embraced for one final ‘Adieu.’”

The review called Dupuis’ interpretation a “star-making performance” while Barton was commended for releasing a “powerful mezzo.”

This is the latest in a series of Live in HD transmissions of the season. It will be followed by “Turandot,” “Lucia di Lammermoor,” and “Hamlet.”
