Wagner’s Ring Cycle Helps Metropolitan Opera Ticket Sales Improve

By Francisco Salazar

Peter Gelb has revealed that ticket sales for the 2018-19 Metropolitan Opera season were up from the past three seasons.

The General manager revealed that the season, which concluded on Saturday, May 11, sold 69 percent of all tickets, up from 67% from the previous two seasons.

The AP revealed that total tickets sold during the eight-month season, which do not reflect discounting, remained steady at 75 percent.

One of the factors for tickets bouncing back was the Ring Cycle, which saw two runs of the tetralogy sell out. Gelb stated that the “Ring” will be back in five or six years but has not decided on whether or not it will be a new production or Robert Lepage’s production.

The general manager also stated that he hopes the box office gets another boost next season as the Met is set to present Sunday afternoon performances and those tickets are already selling better than evening performances.
