Metropolitan Opera Orchestra Appoints New Acting Principal Oboist

By Francisco Salazar

The Metropolitan Opera Orchestra has named Mitchell Kuhn acting principal Oboist.

The instrumentalist took to social media to announce the news and said, “I am so thrilled (and still a little schocked) to announce that I’ll be joining the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra as acting principal oboe. I’m so incredibly lucky to have had such incredible teachers, and I could never thank Eric Olson, Robert Walters, Nathan Hughes, Elaine Douvas, Eugene Izotov, Christopher Philpotts, Jim Daniels, Christopher Banks, and Kenneth Williams enough for teaching me so much about life, auditions, music, oboe, and reeds. I also couldn’t do it without the love and support of my family (Ouida, Kirk, Kathryn), the best friends in the world, and Natalia, who’s heard more oboe mock auditions than anyone rightly deserves. Also, if anyone knows of anyone subletting a place on the UWS please let me know.  See you back in the city!”

Kuhn was the principal oboist of the Florida Orchestra in the 2019-2020 season and has been a soloist with the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra.

He also made his debut with the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra and has participated in the New York String Orchestra Seminar, Marlboro Music, Verbier Festival Orchestra, Music Academy of the West, National Orchestra Institute, Kent/Blossom Music Festival, National Symphony Orchestra Summer Music Institute, and the Tanglewood Institute.
