Metropolitan Opera Announces Another Cast Change for ‘The Queen of Spades’
By Francisco SalazarThe Metropolitan Opera has announced yet another cast change for its production of “The Queen of Spades.”
The company announced that Galina Cheplakova will sing the role of Lisa, replacing Sonya Yoncheva.
Yoncheva took to social media and said, “Dear All, in the past few days I had very strong symptoms of a flu which disabled me to perform and finish my production of Queen of Spades. As you may sense it is really annoying for me to cancel my performance, especially when I have worked hard for more than a month and even more I have a dream cast, orchestra and conductor. Unfortunately, these things are unpredictable and I can’t do much than wait to get better. In anyways this was one of the best experience and a debut I will cherish in my heart forever. I will meet you at my concerts in Europe just in a few days and another Lisa is awaiting for me in the summer too. To the Met Opera and their entire team a big thank and a hug. We will see us very soon for Chénier in the winter. Sincerely yours, Sonya”
Cheplakova made her Met debut on June 4, also filling in for Yoncheva. The Russian soprano has performed with the Bashkir State Opera, Oper Graz, the State Opera in Kazakhstan, Tokyo Symphony Orchestra, and Berliner Philharmoniker. She has also covered at the Bayerische Staatsoper.
Cheplakova will join a cast that includes Arsen Soghomonyan, Violeta Urmana, Igor Golavatenko, Alexey Markov, and Maria Barakova. Keri-Lynn Wilson conducts the production of Elijah Moshinsky. The performance will be broadcast on the radio.
Yoncheva returns to the stage later in June for concert performances in France, Austria, Switzerland, and Germany.
