The Met is set to revive Julie Taymor’s “The Magic Flute” on Sunday, Dec. 15, 2019.
The opera will be headlined by a wide-ranging cast of familiar and new faces.
Queens and Kings
Kathryn Lewek will reprise her Queen of the Night for the fifth season of her career. To date it is the only opera she has ever sung at the Met, accumulating 27 performances in the role. Jeni Houser will make her Met debut in a single performance of the role on Jan. 2, 2020.
Morris Robinson and Soloman Howard will get an even split as Sarastro, each performing in four shows. Robinson has appeared in the opera a total of 45 times to date, but 33 of those were as Sarastro. He first performed the role in 2006 and has interpreted it again in 2007, 2010, 2011, 2016, 2017, and 2018.
This will be the first time that Howard performs the role at the Met; he has 29 performances to date and all of them have been in Verdi’s “Aida.” Patrick Guetti will make his Met debut with a single performance as Sarastro.
Prince & Princess
As Pamina, Joélle Harvey will make her Met debut. Ying Fang will take over three performances, her first in the role at the Met. She has performed 75 times with the company since her debut in 2013; last season she appeared in “La Clemenza di Tito.”
As Tamino, David Portillo will sing his first “Magic Flute” at the Met. He has appeared 29 times with the company to date in such operas as “Il Barbiere di Siviglia,” “Fidelio,” “The Exterminating Angel,” “The Merry Widow,” and “Dialogues des Carmélites.” Paul Groves will sing two performances. He will reach 200 Met Opera appearances during this run.
Bird Catchers
Will Liverman is set to make Met Opera history as the first black baritone to sing the role of Papageno. This will be his third opera with the company following “Marnie” and “Akhnaten.” Joshua Hopkins will get the bulk of the performances, with “The Magic Flute” being his fifth opera with the company following “Turandot,” “Maria Stuarda,” “La Bohème,” and “Roméo et Juliette.”
Rodell Rosel will be Monostatos with Patrick Carfizzi and Dwayne Croft as the Speaker.
Lothar Koenigs will conduct. He is set to perform “Kát’a Kabanová” later this season.
