MasterVoices Announces 2023-24 Season
By Francisco SalazarMasterVoices has announced its 2023-24 Season. Here are the operatic selections of the season.
“The Grapes of Wrath” by Ricky Ian Gordon and Michael Korie based on John Steinbeck’s Novel will be presented in a concert performance. The performance will be held at Carnegie Hall with the Orchestra of St. Luke and conductor Ted Sperling. The work premiered in 2007 at the Minnesota Opera and features three acts and 33 scenes with no recitatives, and with thirteen principal and 50 featured roles.
In a statement Sperling said, “As we celebrate my tenth anniversary with MasterVoices, I’m delighted to revisit the very first project I brought to the group, the magnificent American opera, The Grapes of Wrath. And following up on the rare Sondheim gem we presented last season (Anyone Can Whistle), I’m excited to bring The Frogs to a new audience. The show is wildly funny, with a sophisticated and sometimes haunting score by the late master. With our cherished collaborator, Doug Varone, we are honored to collaborate on his latest work, set to the soaring melodies of Handel remixed by composer Nico Bentley.”
Performance Dates: April 17, 2024
“To My Arms / Restore” will feature arias from Handel’s “Alexander Balus,” “Atalanta,” “Giulio Cesare,” “Orlando,” “Samson,” “Scipione,” “Semele,” “Serse,” “Teseo,” and Handel’s choral work Dixit Dominus. The MasterVoices Chorus will be conducted by Ted Sperling and Doug Varone and Dancers.
Performance Dates: March 22 & 23, 2024
