West Edge Opera (WEO) has unveiled the composer/librettist teams selected for its annual SNAPSHOT 2027.

The selected works include “Trusted,” “sub rosa,” “Bog Hag Wine Night,” “Munch” and “Desert Bloom.” Excerpts from these works are set to be showcased on Saturday, Feb. 27, 2027, at First Church Berkeley and on Sunday, Feb. 28, 2027, at the Taube Atrium Theater in San Francisco. Mary Chun, Kyle Naig or WEO Music Director Jonathan Khuner will conduct the performance with the teams receiving feedback sessions with leaders in new opera, an audio recording and an interview video shared online.

“Trusted,” with music by Aaron Israel Levin and a libretto by Marella Martin Koch, centers on two adult sisters dealing with the emotional and legal fallout of their father’s decades-long fraud.

“sub rosa” features music by Daniel Reza Sabzghabaei and a libretto by Ashlee Haze and tells the story of a Parishioner and a Reverend who meet in a confessional booth.

Beth Wiemann and Cecilia Raker’s “Bog Hag Wine Night” depicts three witches who reunite for a moms’ night out and discuss their daughters and the expectations placed on bog hag mothers.

“Munch,” with music by Saman Shahi and a libretto by Rachel Gray, follows a woman in a retirement home who is slowly consumed by a larva attached to her body.

“Desert Bloom,” with music by Gillian Rae Perry and a libretto by Mo Holmes, tells the tale of a lost woman who falls in love with a century-old spirit also in mourning.

The 2027 works were selected by Chun, Khuner, SNAPSHOT co-founder Brian M. Rosen, Associate Conductor Kyle Naig and WEO Director of Marketing & Engagement Kenneth Kellogg.
