
MassOpera Announces New Executive Creative Producers
By David SalazarMassOpera has announced the appointment of Brenda Huggins and Marcus Schenck as Executive Creative Producers.
Huggins and Schenck will jointly guide MassOpera’s artistic direction, organizational strategy, and civic engagement work. Their leadership will support the company’s mission to create inclusive opera experiences aligned with the diversity of contemporary Boston.
“I am thrilled to pass the MassOpera baton to Brenda Huggins and Marcus Schenck… I can rest assured that the company is in excellent hands,” said Founder and former Artistic Director Dana Lynne Varga, per an official press release.
The new producing team will focus on new works development, site-specific projects, and expanded education initiatives. Priority areas include fostering original operas, reimagining repertory through community-engaged processes, and strengthening partnerships with schools, local organizations, and public institutions. These efforts aim to build sustainable arts spaces and highlight underrepresented artists and stories.
Brenda Huggins is a stage director, dramaturg, puppetry artist, and arts administrator who leads the Center for Performing Arts at the Colleges of the Fenway and has directed or produced work with NEMPAC Opera Project, Opera del West, Guerilla Opera, White Snake Projects, and Boston Lyric Opera. She is also a former Learning and Leadership Manager at OPERA America.
Schenck is a Boston-based baritone, educator, and arts leader who has performed with such companies as Boston Lyric Opera and Odyssey Opera. He also previously led the Promenade Opera Project as Executive & Artistic Director.
