The Symphony Orchestra of India has appointed Martyn Brabbins as its Chief Conductor.

His tenure will begin on Jan. 1, 2026, and he will conduct the orchestra in four programmes each season at the National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA) in Mumbai, one of Asia’s largest multi-venue arts and cultural centres. Brabbins will also advise the NCPA on matters of artistic strategy, orchestra development, and the choice of guest conductors, soloists, and repertoire.

Brabbins’ association with the Symphony Orchestra of India goes back many years, as he has been a regular guest for years and took the orchestra on their first UK tour in February 2019.

In a statement, Brabbins said, “This is clearly an orchestra that’s going places. Their excitement, sense of discovery and real zest for the music translated to the audience”

Brabbins will lead the orchestra concurrently with his Chief Conductor position at the Malmö Symphony in Sweden. Over the years, Brabbins has conducted such orchestras as the Royal Concertgebouw, San Francisco Symphony, DSO Berlin and Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony, as well as the Philharmonia, and BBC Symphony.
