English National Opera Announces New Partnership with Greater Manchester
By Francisco SalazarThe English National Opera has announced plans for a major new partnership between the company and the city-region of Greater Manchester.
The company announced performances across Greater Manchester starting in the summer of 2025.
In June 2025, the ENO will hold a special performance for the Manchester Classical Festival at The Bridgewater Hall. It will be a collaboration between the Chorus of ENO and The Hallé.
In October 2025, the company will present a newly staged version of Benjamin Britten’s “Albert Herring” at Lowry, performed with the Orchestra of ENO.
In February 2026 Mozart’s “Così fan tutte” will be presented at The Bridgewater Hall.
In May 2026, the UK premiere of “Angel’s Bone,” the Pulitzer prize-winning contemporary opera by Chinese American composer Du Yun and librettist Royce Vavrek, will be produced by ENO in collaboration with Factory International, BBC Philharmonic Orchestra and presented at Aviva Studios.
Finally in April 2027, “Einstein on the Beach” will be presented in a new experiential production presented with Factory International, Improbable and Park Avenue Armory New York. Phelim McDermott directs and the production will premiere at Aviva Studios.
The English National Opera also announced other programs which you can read here.
The announcement follows two years of turmoil for the company since the relocation demand was made. The Arts Council originally reduced grants if it did not relocate in 2026 but then provided extra funds and extended that deadline. The upheaval has led the ENO to make cuts to its orchestra and chorus and caused members to threaten to strike earlier this year. The company’s music director Martyn Brabbins also resigned in protest at the cuts and the strike was eventually called off.
