Marlon Daniel Receives Honor France’s Medal for Overseas Commitment

Conductor Marlon Daniel has been awarded the Honor Medal for Overseas Commitment (Médaille d’honneur de l’engagement ultramarin), a French honor recognizing exceptional service to France’s overseas territories.
The distinction acknowledges Daniel’s longstanding commitment to preserving and promoting the cultural heritage of France and the French Caribbean.
Daniel is founder and artistic and music director of the Festival International de Musique Saint Georges and the Joseph Bologne International Violin Competition, platforms dedicated to the life, music, and legacy of Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint Georges. Throughout his career, the conductor has championed historically overlooked composers, supported the creation of new works, and expanded opportunities for emerging artists.
“Receiving the Médaille d’honneur de l’engagement ultramarin is profoundly meaningful to me. I see it not simply as recognition of my work but an affirmation of the years I, and others, have devoted to bringing Joseph Bologne’s extraordinary life to light, and to creating a space where music, history, education, and cultural exchange can flourish. This recognition gives me renewed strength. It tells me that the communities I have worked so hard to serve in France, the French Caribbean and globally recognize the value of what I, and all those who have worked alongside me, have brought to the table,” Daniel said per an official statement. “I hope this moment will become something more than a personal accolade and will encourage corporations, foundations, institutions and individuals to invest more in the arts. The Festival International de Musique Saint-Georges has shown what is possible when hard work, preparation and opportunity come together. I am deeply grateful and proud to receive this honor, and I see it not only as a recognition of what has been accomplished, but as catalyst for what is still possible. I am now even more determined than ever to continue my life in music, one note at a time.”
The recognition comes as Daniel prepares for his Finnish debut, leading the Kuopio Symphony Orchestra on April 8, 2027.
