Manhattan School of Music to Present ‘Der Kaiser von Atlantis’

By Francisco Salazar

Manhattan School of Music is set to present Viktor Ullmann and Peter Kien’s “Der Kaiser von Atlantis.”

The company will be presented on April 9 and 10 at the MSM Opera Theatre.

Djordje Nesic conducts and will be directed by John De los Santos.

“Der Kaiser von Atlantis” was written in 1942 by Ullmann and Kein while imprisoned in the concentration camp Terezin. The opera was rehearsed in the prison, but never performed. The musical score was discovered in the 1970s and since then the opera has gained a new life.

Conductor Nesic said, “I was able to learn many details about its creation during my visit to Prague and Terezin in January of this year.”
