Malmö Opera Presents Video Marrying Rossini and Hip Hop ‘Hip Hopera: Il Barbiere’

By Chris Ruel

Malmö Opera has married opera with hip hop to create “Hip Hopera: Il Barbiere,” a creative mashup of hip hop and Rossini’s “Largo al factotum” from “The Barber of Seville.”

The three-minute video features Effayé, a rapper, musician, and songwriter from Malmö, performing alongside Swedish tenor Sebastian Durán. Backed by the 60-piece Malmö Opera Orchestra conducted by Nils-Petter Ankarblom, the duo weaves a musical tapestry connecting the two widely divergent art forms across the boundaries of age.

Separate but related, the company’s “Barber” run opened on Feb. 12, 2022, and will continue through Mar. 31. The opera stars Rafael Fingerlos in the title role with Levy Sekgapane as Almaviva. As Rosina, audiences are getting the chance to hear Theresa Kronthaler. Basilio is interpreted by Christophoros Stamboglis and Bartolo is Daniel Giulianini. Rounding out the cast is Elin Eriksson as Berta.

The opera is directed by Annabel Arden with Alexander Joel at the podium.
