By David Salazar

Opera America has announced the major themes of its Opera Conference 2019.

The major annual event will take place between June 12-16 in San Francisco and will feature more than 700 opera administrators, trustees, and artists who will discuss three overlying themes: Examining Traditions, Exploring Business Innovation and Deepening Civic Practice.

“Examining Traditions” will be led by Philip Kennicott of The Washington Post; he will be joned by such opera luminaries as Jake Heggie, Nicole Paiement, Matthew Shivlock, Beth Morrison, Timothy o’Leary, and Marc A. Scorca, among others.

“Exploring Business Innovation” will be led by Robert Marx with Alexis Gonzales-Black, Michael Gregor, Matthew Shivlock, Annie Burridge, and Lisa Middleton, among others.

Finally, “Deepening Civic Duty” will feature Jane Chu of the National Endowment for the Arts as the moderator for a session that will include Melissa Ngan, Timothy O’Leary, Gwyn Williams,  and Lauren Medici, among others.

“At a time when opera is faced with a combination of challenges and exciting opportunities, field leaders have to draw on innovative ideas from within and outside the performing arts to thrive,” said Marc A. Scorca, president/CEO of OPERA America in a press release. “A faculty of experts from San Francisco and across the country will be at the center of intense and stimulating discussion.”

There will be additional programming that includes meetings for OPERA America’s Women’s Opera Network and ALAANA Opera Network. The conference will climax with a New Works Forum.
