Maggio Musicale Fiorentino Superintendant Investigated for Embezzlement

Maggio Musicale Fiorentino Superintendant Alexander Pereira is being investigated for embezzlement regarding expenses incurred and charged to the lyric-symphonic foundation.

The superintendant’s lawyer Sigrfido Fenyes received a notice on January 27 together with an invitation to appear at the public prosecutor’s office on Feb. 9.

According to Ansa.it, Periera will be interrogated by the prosecutor Christine von Borries. The Italian news source also noted that it was Pereira himself who communicated the matter to the meeting of the Board of Trustees of the foundation.

He said, “I inform you that I have received guarantee information from the Florence prosecutor’s office with which the existence of an investigation against me. In substance, it is a matter of the facts already widely reported by the media in recent times. I will reiterate and clarify to the judicial authority what I have always maintained in every forum, including the control commission of the Municipality of Florence and the board of auditors of the Foundation, namely that these are expenses all connected and necessary for the exercise of my mandate as superintendent and artistic director of the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino.”

The Maggio Musicale Fiorentino is next set to perform Busoni’s “Doctor Faust” opening on Feb. 7, 2023.
