Madison Lyric Stage to Revive ‘We Live Only for the Music: Max Lorenz and the Third Reich’

By David Salazar

Madison Lyric Stage will present “We Live Only for the Music: Max Lorenz and the Third Reich” on Jan. 31 and Feb. 1, 2025.

The work is a one-man play with music written and performed by tenor Marc Deaton, which originally premiered in 2018 with Madison Lyric Stage. It chronicles the life of Lorenz, a major Wagnerian tenor in the 1930s and 1940s who happened to be Hitler’s favorite tenor. The work explores Lorenz’s major challenges, including concealing his homosexuality and his relationship with his Jewish wife.

The program includes excerpts from works by Strauss and Wagner.

“I am thrilled to once again share Max Lorenz’s inspiring story with the shoreline community,” said Deaton, artistic director of Madison Lyric Stage, per an official press release. “This play explores the intersection of Wagner’s operatic genius and the devastating impact of the Third Reich and the Holocaust. It is a testament to the resilience of art and the human spirit against incredible odds.”

The Jan. 31 performance kicks off at 7 p.m. while the latter show starts at 4 p.m. Both take place at the Shoreline Unitarian Universalist Society in Madison, CT.
