Madison Lyric Stage To Present ‘Hansel And Gretel’

By Nicole Kuchta

Madison Lyric Stage in Connecticut will present an immersive production of Humperdinck’s fairytale opera “Hansel and Gretel” this October.

Allison Lindsay will star as Hansel alongside Sarah Himmelstein as Gretel. They will be joined by Carly Henderson as Mother, Jacob Boergesson as Father, Jessics Rost as the Dew Fairy, Felicia Baker as the Sandman, dancer Sarah Kennedy as the Angel, and Lindsay Botticello as the Witch. The production, directed by Marc Deaton, will be sung in English and accompanied by piano.

Prior to the start of the opera, audience members can expect to experience a journey of their own. Guests will enter a small front parlor that doubles as the children’s tenement home, and as the “Witch-ride” music begins to play, they will continue on toward “the pitch-black forest, which will ultimately reveal itself to be the Witch’s gingerbread house decorated with candy, cakes and cookies.” Additionally, guests can enjoy a Witch’s Stew before the show and during intermission.

“A favorite amongst audiences both young and old, ‘Hansel and Gretel’ delivers a powerful message of courage in the face of adversity,” Deaton stated in a press release. “Featuring well-known characters and beautiful folk music-inspired melodies, the piece is very accessible. And, since we will be approaching Halloween, audiences can expect some scares and chills along the way.”

Eight performances will be held at Madison’s historic Deacon John Grave House from Oct. 4 – 13, 2019.
