Lyric Festival of Stone Theaters Safely Concludes Run of Performances

By Logan Martell

Running from July 24 through September 26, 2020, the Sicilian Lyric Choir has safely concluded its Lyric Festival of Stone Theaters.

The last two months saw the company perform in culturally-significant sites such as the archaeological parks in Taormina, Syracuse, and Tindari, as well as locations such as the Timoleontee Walls of Gela, the Donnafugata Castle, the Stone Courtyard of the Palazzo di Citta of Avola, and more.

Performances were carried out in accordance with health regulations and were made possible by the patronage of the European Parliament, and the Pontificum Consilium de Cultura of the Vatican City.

The programming for this year’s festival included works from Beethoven, a production of Mascagni’s “Cavalleria Rusticana,” Orf’s “Carmina Burana,” Ramirez’s “Misa Criolla,” a Puccini-Verdi Opera Gala, and a Lyric Gala titled “Made in Sicily.”

Now in its second year, the Opera Festival of the Stone Theaters is promoted and produced by SLC, headed up by President Alberto Munafo Siragusa, and Choir Master Francesco Costa.

The company will next present a tribute to the late tenor Marcello Giordani on Oct. 5 with a performance of sacred repertoire such as Emanuele Rincon d’Astorga’s “Stabat Mater.”
