Long Beach Opera Announces Unique & Modern 2018-19 Season

The Long Beach Opera has announced its 2018-19 season, which is also the company’s 40th anniversary season and the 20th of Artistic and General Director Andreas Mitisek.

The season kicks off with “Three Tales by Beryl Korot & Steve Reich” on Nov. 3, 2018. The documentary video opera emphasizes three events of the 20th century – the Hindenburg explosion, the Bikini Atoll nuclear tests, and Dolly the cloned sheep.

Performance Dates: Nov. 3, 4, 2018

Next up on the slate is the US premiere of “The Black Cat.” The work features the music of  David Sylvian and Johann Sebastian Bach, with additional recording of music by Ernst Krenek, Martin Haselböck, and Ülo Krigul.

Performance Dates: Jan. 19, 20, 2019

In The Penal Colony” by Phillip Glass will follow in April. The work will be directed by Jeff Janisheski and will take place at The Studio Theater and CSULB Long Beach.

Performance Dates: April 25- May 5, 2019

The World Premiere of Anthony Davis’ “The Central Park Five” is next up on the slate.

“In my career as a composer, I have devoted myself to the creation of works that bring to light issues of political and social significance. Particularly my operas have addressed pivotal events and figures in American history with a focus on the issues of race and justice,” the composer stated in a press release.

Performance Dates: June 15-23, 2019
