Lisette Oropesa Headlines Teatro dell’Opera di Roma’s ‘La Sonnambula’

By Francisco Salazar

The Teatro dell’Opera di Roma is set to present Bellini’s “La Sonnambula.”

The opera which will run between April 9 and 17, will be performed in a new production by Jean-Philippe Clarac and Olivier Deloeuil.

Lisette Oropesa will sing the title role alongside John Osborn who portrays Elvino, Roberto Tagliavini who sings Conte Rodolfo, and Monica Bacelli as Teresa. Francesco Lanzillotta will conduct it.

The second cast, which will perform on April 11, 13, and 16, will be headed by Ruth Iniesta, Marco Ciaponi, and Manuel Fuentes.

Regarding the opera, Lanzilotta said, “La Sonnambula is undoubtedly a title that represents one of Bellini’s highest creative works. Developed within a simple plot, with innocent and idyllic tones. The staves of this title are filled with melodies. The semi-serious genre to which ‘La Sonnambula’ belongs, purified of the comic element, as well as the idyllic tones mentioned above, do not however eliminate the conflicts that unravel between the protagonists in this work. Precisely the misunderstanding, with the consequent conflict between the two lovers, also reveals a vision of love as possession on Elvino’s part. The idyll therefore does not materialize regardless but is achieved with effort, through the calming of conflict.”
