Les Arts to Present ‘Woman at Point Zero’

By David Salazar

Les Arts in Valencia, Spain is set to present “Woman at Point Zero” in collaboration with ENSEMS.

The showcase, which is slated for Sept. 15, 2023 at 7:30 p.m., will be the Spanish premiere of the vocal multimedia and intercultural work by Bushra El-Turk and Stacy Hardy. It tells the story of Fatma, a former sex worker who was jailed for murdering a violent pimp, and Sama, a documentary director who wants to tell Fatma’s story.

The opera will be directed by Laila Soliman and stars Dima Orsho.

Of the Royal Opera House production this past season, OperaWire’s Benjamin Poore noted that “‘Woman at Point Zero’ is straight-talking. If you don’t like artworks that are upfront with you about what they’re about, then you will not like this. It would indeed be heavy weather but for the essential leavening agent of Bushra El-Turk’s magical score.”

The opera is presented in co-production with Festival d’Aix-en-Provence, LOD Muziektheater de Gante, Snape Maltings, and Grand Théâtre de Lumexbourg.
