LA Opera to Premiere ‘Death’ by Tyshawn Sorey and Nadia Hallgren

By Logan Martell

On Feb. 19, 2021, LA Opera will present the online world premiere of a new digital short film, entitled “Death.”

This upcoming work comes from celebrated composer Tyshawn Sorey and filmmaker Nadia Hallgren, whose documentary on Michelle Obama, “Becoming,” was nominated for four Emmy Awards.

Adapting the poem of the same name by turn-of-the-century Black poet Paul Laurence Dunbar, “Death” will be performed by mezzo-soprano Amanda Lynn Bottoms and pianist Howard Watkins; Sorey himself will also appear in the film to speak about the work.

“Death” will be available to watch free of charge on the company’s Facebook and YouTube pages, as part of LA Opera’s On Now platform of online programming. This is the latest of LA Opera’s numerous short film releases on its On Now streaming platform; the company recently streamed works by Ellen Reid and Missy Mazzoli.
