LA Opera Cancels Remainder of 2019-20 Season, Comes to Agreement With Labor Unions

By David Salazar

The LA Opera has announced that it has canceled its performances of “The Marriage of Figaro.” More importantly, the organization has also reached agreements with unions regarding cancellations of the run as well as performances of “Pelléas et Mélisande.”

The performances encompassed what remained of the company’s 2019-20 season.

Per agreements with unions, the company’s “Pelléas et Mélisande” was canceled on April 10; union employees hired for that production will be paid 100 percent of their contract rate through April 10 and 75 percent thereafter. Meanwhile, those hired for “The Marriage of Figaro,” which was set to kick off rehearsals on May 4, will be paid 75 percent of their contract rate. Union benefits will also be paid in full.

In coming to these agreements, the company is implementing additional cost reduction strategies throughout the organization, including pay reductions for senior management ranging from 10-25 percent.

The LA Opera is also setting up a Relief Fund to assist artists, artisans, and other staff members throughout the COVID-19 crisis. The fund is aimed to pay independent contractors not covered under the Paycheck Protection Plan; these artists will be paid 25 percent of the full value of their agreements, plus union benefits.

Unions involved in the negotiations included the American Federation of Musicians Local 47 (AFM), American Guild of Musical Artists (AGMA), International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees Local 33 Stagehands (IATSE), Makeup Artists and Hair Stylists Local 706, and Theatrical Wardrobe Union (TWU) Local 768.
