La Monnaie/De Munt Displays Before & After Photos of Ukrainian Civil, Religious , and Cultural Institutions

By Chris Ruel

La Monnaie which bathes the façade of the Mint in blue and yellow each night recently projected the image of the bombed-out Mariupol Theatre, showing the destruction the war has wrought on Ukraine’s civil, religious, and cultural institutions.

The theater was destroyed on March 22, 2022.

Hundreds of people who sought shelter were inside the building when it was destroyed.

As a show of solidarity, and to remind people of the cultural devastation, posters showing before and after photos of various ruined institutions which symbolized Ukrainian culture—something Vladimir Putin claims does not exist—have been placed along the outside of the Mint.

The photos include those of Freedom Square, Art Museum of Kuindzhi, Chernihiv Regional Youth Library, Hrhorii Skovaroda Museum, Palace of Culture “Youth,”Luhansk Regional Academic Ukrainian Music and Drama Theatre, Sviatohirsk Lavra of the Holy Dormition, and the building housing the School of Economics of Karazin University—all of which are mostly obliterated.

The La Monnaie website states that “All these projects are implemented in cooperation with Promote Ukraine and the Ukrainian Institute in Kyiv. They are also part of the solidarity between the twin cities of Brussels and Lviv in Ukraine.”
