La MaMa to Revive ‘luzAzul’ This June

By David Salazar

New York City’s La MaMa Experimental Theatre Club will present “luzAzul,” an immersive opera designed for babies and their caregivers, June 4 through 7, 2026.

The work is created and directed by Argentinian opera stage director Malena Dayen, with music by David Rosenmeyer, choreography by Troy Ogilvie, and technical design by Sangmin Chae. Performers Samarie Alicea, Sam Ogilvie, and Eugenia Forteza will alternate across the run.

The production invites babies between the ages of 0 and 24 months, alongside their caregivers, to take part in a shared performance experience incorporating music, dance, and interactive elements.

“luzAzul” was developed with support from Princeton University and CultureHub.

Dayen, a Princeton Hodder Fellow, previously directed the world premiere of Derrick Wang’s “Fearless” for Opera Delaware and served as assistant stage director at the Metropolitan Opera for Deborah Colker’s production of “Ainadamar” and “El Último Sueño de Frida y Diego.”
