Korean National Opera Visits Juvenile Detention Centers
By Afton MarkayThe Korean National Opera has set up visits to local juvenile detention centers.
The company’s National Opera Studio Youth Education Corps members will visit the Seoul Juvenile Detention Center and the Anyang Juvenile Detention Center in April. These concerts will take place as part of the 2026 National Opera Cultural Sharing Performance. The project, which began in 2023, is an outreach to groups facing limitations in enjoying culture and the arts due to geographical and social conditions, aiming to provide emotional comfort and empathy through opera. This year, the program is scheduled to visit military units and childcare facilities in addition to correctional institutions.
Sopranos Shin So-yeon and Jang Ju-mi, tenor Park Kyung-dae, baritone Lee Seung-woo, and pianist Park Ji-hoon will perform arias, duets, art songs, and crossover pieces tailored to the interests of the audience.
General and Artistic Director Park Hye-jin stated in a press release, “I hope this performance provides a small measure of comfort and courage to young people, and helps them grow into healthy members of society. The National Opera will continue to fulfill its social responsibilities as a public arts institution.”
