Korean National Opera to Present ‘Werther’
By David SalazarThe Korea National Opera will kick off its 2026 season with a four-performance run of Massenet’s “Werther.”
The showcase, which will be staged at the Seoul Arts Center Opera Theater from April 23 to 26, 2026, will feature Bumjoo Lee in the title role with Juyeon Jeong as Charlotte, Dongyong Noh as Albert, and Celine Mun as Sophie.
Conductor Seok-won Hong leads the performance with film director Jong-won Park making his opera directing debut with the production.
The staging takes a classically faithful approach, recreating the 18th-century setting with period-accurate costumes — including Werther’s iconic yellow vest and blue frock coat. Stage, costume, lighting, and video design are handled by Wolfgang von Zubeck.
