Kentucky Opera to Present Reimagining of Rameau’s ‘Pygmalion’

Kentucky Opera is set to present a reimagining of Rameau’s “Pygmalion” starting on April 4.

For four performances, audiences will experience the famed work in a production that takes it to the 1950s with an all-new libretto by Barbara Lynne Jamison, the company’s General Director and CEO.

“The story of Pygmalion is a timeless exploration of creation and transformation,” said Jamison, per an official press release. “Through contemporary lens, this retelling of the ancient Roman story illuminates the societal constructs that shape our identities. We invite our community to reflect on the universal drive to be our true selves and shed external expectations that don’t serve us.”

The opera will star Marc Molomot, Tess Altiveros, and Rachel Kobernick; Kobernick and Molomot will be making their company debuts. Stephen Stubbs conducts.

There will be five shows in total, with the final one set for April 11, 2025. All performances take place at the Kentucky Opera Center for Cultural Health in Louisville.
