By David SalazarKentucky Opera is set to present the premiere of “This Little Light of Mine” starting on Feb. 21, 2025.
The company’s first commission since 1988 features music by Chandler Carter and a libretto by Diana Solomon-Glover to explore the life and legacy of Fannie Lou Harmer, a civil rights icon.

Through her courage and resilience, Fannie Lou Hamer’s story inspires us to continue to use our voices in our communities and at the ballot box to shape the world we share,” said Barbara Lynne Jamison, General Director and CEO of Kentucky Opera, in an official press release.
The opera will star mezzo-soprano Ronnita Miller (Fannie Lou Hamer), soprano Chabrelle Williams (Dorothy Jean Hamer), and soprano Brandi Diggs (June Johnson).
There will be two performances of the work on Feb. 21 and 23, 2025.
Additionally, the company has announced a series of events to promote the premiere and conversations about Harmer. There will be a “Tag-Along” experience for children while adults attend the Feb. 23 matinee.
On Feb. 6, 2025, there will be an event as part of the “Awakenings” series that allows audiences to delve into the history and social relevance associated with the work.
Finally, there will be an opening night dinner with the composer and librettist on Feb. 21, 2025.
