Ahead of the 2024 elections, Kentucky Opera is presenting “Amplify Freedom Songs: Celebrating Fannie Lou Hamer” on Oct. 6, 2024.

The showcase, which honors the 107th birthday of the famed civil rights activist and leader, will showcase baritone Jorell Williams and pianist Taylor Burkhardt as they perform classical songs and spirituals by Black composers.

“Our goal is to use the medium of opera to tell stories that matter to all of us,” said Barbara Lynne Jamison, General Director and CEO of Kentucky Opera, per an official press release. “Fannie Lou Hamer’s story is one of resilience, courage, and unwavering commitment to justice — and her influence remains extremely relevant today, as we continue to see  threats and fears surrounding voting. Through this concert  and our upcoming performance of This Little Light of Mine, we aim to honor Mrs. Hamer’s legacy and inspire our community to continue her fight for Americans’ freedom to use our voices at the ballot box.”

The company is also set to present Chandler Carter and Diana Solomon-Glover’s “This Little Light of Mine,” in February. The opera was commissioned by Santa Fe Opera and Kentucky Opera and explores Hamer’s life.
