Kennedy Center to Remain Open Beyond Planned Closure Date

By Francisco Salazar

The Kennedy Center will not close on July 5, 2026.

The Washington Post is reporting that the center will stay open for the time being, during an ongoing legal battle faced regarding its renaming and renovation project. The news outlet stated that Kennedy Center executives have stated that the venue will stay open but new shows and concerts will not be scheduled.

The news comes after the Kennedy Center was forced to take Donald J. Trump’s name off the building following a court ruling on May 29 that said the renaming and closure of the center was illegal. Since the Trump’s was removed from the facade on June 12, scaffolding remains in place covering part of the side of the building where Trump’s name was removed.

It also comes as the center is experiencing financial straits with the board looking for various options including closing the center, putting on limited events at the center in areas not affected by the renovations, and closing the center periodically to address serious repairs. No decisions have been made at this time.

In March, the board of the Kennedy Center approved a plan to close the venue for two years to undergo renovations.
