Kaufman Music Center to Host Ukrainian Contemporary Music Festival

By Chris Ruel

The Ukrainian Contemporary Music Festival will return to the Kaufman Music Center in New York City from Mar. 17 to 19, 2023.

The festival will honor Borys Liatoshynsky (1895 -1968), regarded as the “father” of Ukrainian contemporary music.

Featured works include those of his students and contemporary composers influenced by him.

The festival aims to preserve Ukraine’s musical history and cultural identity in light of the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine. Putin refutes Ukrainian culture even exists.

The festival will open on Mar. 17, 2023, with “Inspirations,” showcasing Liatoshynsky’s works alongside those of composers who inspired him.

The second concert, on Mar. 18, 2023, “Evolutions,” will feature pieces by contemporary Ukrainian composers who trace their pedagogical lineage back to Liatoshynsky.

The final concert, “Conversations,” on Mar. 19, 2023, will present Liatoshynsky’s Third and Fourth String Quartets alongside works by Béla Bartók and Aaron Copland, who shared similar interests with Liatoshynsky in national music.
