Kate Soper’s Philosophy-Opera ‘ISPA DIXIT’ Gets Production At Miller Theatre

The Miller Theatre at Columbia University School of Arts is set to open its 2018-19 Composer Portraits series with Kate Soper’s “ISPA DIXIT.”

The performance, set for Oct. 27, 2018 at 8 p.m., will feature the composer as soprano soloist, appearing alongside violinist Josh Modney, flautist Erin Lesser, and percussionist Ian Antonio.

The work, which features text by Aristotle, Guido d’Arrezo, Lydia Davis, Michael Drayton, Robert Duncan, Plato, Sigmund Freud, Jenny Holzer, Sophocles, Sarah Teasdale, and Ludwig Wittgenstein,

was called a “philosophy-opera” by The New Yorker, bringing together aspects of monodrama, Greek theater, and screwball comedy. It will be directed by Ashley Tata with lighting design by Anshuman Bhatia, costume design by Nina Vartanian, and projection design by Bradley Peterson.

“We are proud to kick off our 30th Anniversary Season’s flagship Composer Portraits series with Kate Soper’s unique voice,” said Miller Theatre Executive Director Melissa Smey in a press release. “‘IPSA DIXIT’ is an awe-inspiring masterpiece that you will be thinking about long after the performance is over.”
