The Wiener Staatsoper has announced that tenor Juan Diego Flórez will replace Stephen Costello in the title role of Gounod’s “Faust” for the final performance on Nov. 11, 2021.

Costello was previously replaced for the performance on Nov. 7, 2021, by tenor John Osborn.

Juan Diego Flórez, who premiered the production during the pandemic, joins a cast that includes Rachel Willis-Sørensen as Marguerite, Adam Palka as Méphistophélès, and Étienne Dupuis in the role of Valentin. The rest of the cast includes Ilja Kazakov, Margaret Plummer, and Monika Bohinec. Bertrand de Billy conducts a production by Frank Castorf with set design by Aleksandar Denić.

Costello is scheduled to return to the stage for performances of Donizetti’s “L’elisir d’amore” at the Wiener Staatsoper in November and December 2021.
