Juan Diego Flórez & Étienne Dupuis Lead Wiener Staatsoper’s New ‘Il Barbiere di Siviglia’

By Francisco Salazar

On Sept. 28, the Wiener Staatsoper is set to open a new production of Gioachino Rossini’s “Il Barbiere di Siviglia.”

The production, which will be performed until Oct. 14, will be led by Michele Mariotti, who will be making his Wiener Staatsoper debut. Mariotti was initially supposed to make his debut in 2020 conducting a revival of “Guillaume Tell” and a new production of “Un Ballo in Maschera” but both were canceled due to the health emergency.

The new production by Herbert Fritsch will star Juan Diego Flórez as the Count Almaviva, Étienne Dupuis in the title role, Vasilisa Berzhanskaya as Rosina, Paolo Bordogna as Don Bartolo, and Ildar Abdrazakov as Don Basilio.

The new production of “Il Barbiere di Siviglia” will be the company’s first in 55 years after Günther Rennert’s historical staging.

The broadcast will be broadcasted by the Austrian National radio and television network ORF, both live on Sept. 28 at 7 pm on Radio Ö1, and delayed on Oct. 9 the main evening program on television channel ORF 2. ARTE will broadcast the opera on Nov. 28 and will offer a stream on the online platform ARTE Concert.
